5.0 out of 5 stars Nice leaf blower and vacuum., October 30, 2011

Bought this leaf blower to replace another Black and Decker leaf blower that finally gave up the ghost after 20 years. I really like the vacuum feature this one has and haven’t had any problems with the unit so far. However, I only have 2-3 hours on it at this point but am quite impressed with its performance. It’s of higher quality than my old leaf blower and the vacuum is an added bonus. It’s somewhat heavier than my old blower, but I’d rather have it this way than having it built with lighter and less rugged parts.

So far, I clearly don’t have enough time on this blower/vacuum to have a feel as to its reliability, but what I’ve seen so far, I like.

I bought this blower/vac for one reason only: to chop straw and mulch leaves and it does it well. It is heavy and I probably wouldn’t want to tote it around for long periods of time but for my purposes it is perfect. I also bought the hose/trash can kit and it makes things a lot easier when chopping straw. Here’s a rundown of how I am doing the straw: I put a big flake of straw in my wheelbarrow, set up the Leaf Hog in a lawn chair so the nozzle is overhanging the barrow and start feeding handfuls of straw in. I can fill a 32 gallon can in about 5 minutes. Makes much better garden mulch than whole straw.

If you look down the page where the Leaf Hog is featured you’ll see a package that includes the blower, the hose/trash can assembly and a spare bag. I bought that but the bag does not fit this model. The LH5000 bag is heavy duty and easy to empty with a slide of clip that opens the end of the bag. Seems very durable.

One last thought – many of the negative reviews I’ve seen regarding the LH5000 are from people who are not certified buyers. I’m a somewhat skeptical.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crappy Motor, October 27, 2011 This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
I found out the hard way.

This spring my Leaf Hog worked fine. I used it for a few days cleaning leaves. The blower was adequate, and the vac had no problem sucking up piled up leaves. I liked it because it is electric and I usually trust Black & Decker products.

It is fall now and so I turned this thing on a few days ago to blow some leaves off my drive way, it quickly starts losing power, and I notice the motor is sparking, esp and high speeds. So I turned it off.

To find out why an almost new device is sparking I open it. After examining the motors parts, I see that 2 of the commutator bars are worn, meaning the positive and negative brushes are not connecting properly when it spins – leading to power loss and of course sparks.

I’ve bought many Black Decker/Dewalt electric products. Left some of them in the rain and they still came back for more. I never left this thing outside and didn’t do anything unusual to it – perhaps I should have. The only real wear and tear would have come from dust from blowing leaves around – some of which was caked on the inside of the case. My only guess is the dust shorted one of the wires and fried the commutator…………

This crappy thing has thrown me for a loop. A leaf blower shouldn’t fail after being exposed to yard dirt. Should it. If this is a common problem should BD put a dust cover over the exposed engine parts or put it in a can.

Oh, and Sip Cinderson is the Chinese company that made this crappy motor. They have a nice sticker on the stator. Please build in America again – so I can at least be angry at American shoddy workmanship.

    I’m out 80 bucks.

And I think this thing is a safety hazard.

Sears sells an identical Craftsman model.

    Avoid. You have been warned.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing reliability, October 26, 2011
This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
My 2 year old B&D Leaf Hog just died… burned out power head circuits. While it did a good job while it lasted, it didn’t last very long. I’ve had similar experiences with other B&D products: drill, router, coffee maker, and toaster oven. Good functionality, but short product life. I’m done with B&D. I just ordered a Toro replacement for the dead B&D leaf blower-vac.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, September 21, 2011
This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
This blower exceeded my expectations. The best part are the two different blower attachments, one works great on the driveway and street, the other wobbles which makes it easy to move leaves through the grass. The vacuum works well too, its not very fast but it does suck up any leaves you may miss on stone areas and things like that. I love it!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Better, September 7, 2011
This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
After returning my Worx blower/vac/mulcher I upgraded to this tool. It has the blowing power to sweep the garage and easily remove grass clippings from the sidewalk. I put the vac/mulch function to the test by mulching my hedge clippings. I’m satisfied with the suction power, but it could use more suction power. I returned the Worx tool due to it’s plastic impeller that couldn’t handle hedge clippings. When I used my Black & Decker, it pulverized the clipping with ease. No sparks, smoke, or jams that I experienced with the Worx tool.

Overall, I like the power for blowing and the metal impeller. I would like to have more suction power, but I may be asking for much here. The last item on my wish list I’d lithium ion battery power.

Now that i’ve owned this for some time now; I would buy it again.

This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
This leaf blower/vacuum does everything it says it does. It’s powerful and the variable speed motor is great. I do agree with other reviews in that it’s a bit heavy – the shoulder strap for the bag could be wider to make it more comfortable. I also agree with the review about the dust. OMG THE DUST! Just buy a face mask right along with the item and you’ll be fine. Trust me on this! Dust is only a problem when in vacuum/mulch mode. It is easier to still rake leaves up and then mulch them, but it does work well. The bag is easy to detach and empty. I have no problem with the closure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blower/ Vac – nice improvements, June 7, 2011 Amazon Verified Purchase
This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
I’m impressed with the improvements that have been made to this Blower/ Vac. First is the metal impeller, second no zipper bag, third easy to assemble, fourth more powerful, fifth easier to handle. Overall it was worth the investment over my old Black and Decker blower /vac that had a failing zipper bag.

1.0 out of 5 stars I liked it when it wasn’t catching fire, February 23, 2011
This review is from: Black & Decker LH5000 12 amp Variable Speed Electric Leaf Hog Blower/Vacuum (Lawn & Patio)
This does a great job of blowing leaves but it is loud.

After a couple of months with no problems I noticed that it wasn’t blowing as hard. I looked at the motor and I saw sparks. I waited for a few minute then I tried using it again. I started smelling burning plastic. We did some research and found that this model has a defective engine. It has also been reported that some saw green flames coming from the model.

It never got wet. I used it approximately 5 times. I had it for about 6 months.
