A Lean, Green, Mulching Machine
Shredding leaves with a traditional gas shredder/mulcher can disturb the environment with noxious air and loud noise. Thankfully, with the electric WORX Leaf Mulcher, you can put the ‘green’ back in ‘green thumb’.

Showcasing a powerful 13 Amp motor that delivers 8,500 RPMs, the WORX Leaf Mulcher will reduce a mass of dead leaves and twigs to 1/11th of its original size. That means you won’t be lugging 11 bags of whole leaves to the curb for distribution or disposal–instead, you’ll only have to worry about a single bag.

With the WORX Leaf Mulcher’s 13-inch cut diameter and oversized mouth, you can mulch up to 53 gallons of leaves per minute. Acres of dried leaves can be collected and pulverized into manageable mounds of mulch in practically no time at all.

Create Mulch and Compost
It is estimated that almost 25% of the urban waste stream is made of yard waste and debris. In the fall, it can account for more than 60% of what flows into your local landfill.

The WORX Leaf Mulcher actually transforms your yard’s dead leaves and debris, which would normally end up in a landfill, into vitamin-rich mulch and compost that can be recycled into your garden or flowerbeds.

Shredded leaf mass furnishes nutrients that assist in new plant growth during the growing season. Furthermore, mixing mulch into your garden and flower beds will aerate the soil and encourage new growth. Additionally, leaf mulch will increase water retention in the soil, reducing watering time and saving money.

In addition, the mulcher features a dust-reducing clean-air motor cooling system. Air and mulched leaves are separated through an external cooling air intake and exhaust to significantly reduce dust generation.

For further convenience, The WORX Leaf Mulcher’s safe Flex-a-Line bladeless mulching system features tool-less cutting line replacement and a universal bag holder that accepts both paper and plastic bags. To top it off, an oversized on/off switch allows for easy, hassle-free operation.

After trying over the years to find a more efficient way to remove the 30 to 40 large bags of leaves from our 1/3 acre property I stumbled upon the Worx shredder, it has made such a difference I am almost enjoying leaf pick up now.

This leaf shreader is a great product! My only bad comment is that you really need to wear eye protection and a mask because the dust coming from leaves is unbelievable! Other than that, it is great – save half your bags to use on something else and after the mulch is spread, you have all your bags and your flower beds look great. I added a little milorganite after I spread the mulch and it is already decomposing. Highly recommend this product – it’s actually fun to work in the yard to see your progress.

I was very skeptical of this product but after readings so many reviews I decided to give it a try. I have not been disappointed. Not only is it well made it also works as advertised, with just a few caveats. First, the dryer the leaves the better it works. If the leaves are damp, it has a tendency to clog. But when the leaves are dry it litterally swallows them as you feed them into the hopper. While you can force feed it, it works best if you keep each clump of leaves reasonable. The engine is not the rate limiter, it is very powerful. Obviously, like a “weed wacker” the filament line with use will wear down. Unlike most weed wackers there is no spool of filament and a feed system. However, with a little practice the lines are very easy to change and can be accomplished in less than 45 seconds. I replaced the spare filaments that came with the machine with a thicker gage filament which works great and last longer. One key to filament life is to try and eliminate as many sticks as you can when feeding leaves into the hopper. It is pretty amazing how fast and large pile of leaves can be reduced to a smaller pile of mulch. The side benefit is the nice fine leaf mulch you can use to mulch your garden.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Replacement Flex-a-line, November 15, 2011
This review is from: WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder (Lawn & Patio)
When the flex line works they work great. I have to change line every couple of minutes because it breaks often. When the machine mulches it mulches to very small pieces of leaves. Which is great for adding to the garden. I am not happy with the flex line and wish there were a better stronger line to use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very impressed, November 9, 2011
This review is from: WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder (Lawn & Patio)
Although purchased two months ago and tested, I am now ready to review the WORX Shredder after two days of use. The written reviews by purchasers of this product were extremely helpful and I suggest that anyone considering this product read all of them. I have a half acre of property with mostly oak and some scrub pine trees on the property. Oak leaves are tough and don’t break down. After the Town changed its policy and will not pick up leaves this Fall, I researched reasonably priced shredders, kept my fingers crossed and purchased the WORX. Following the directions, the item is easy to assemble. Use the right gauge extension cord. This draws 13amps and a 12 gauge cord would be appropriate. I place a biodegradable bag as suggested in the literature under it and empty it in my mulch pile or I could place the shredded leaves around bushes to break down and enrich the soil. Wearing proper gear is really important. I do not use ear plugs, but long sleeves, good gloves, goggles, hat, and at times a dust mask may be necessary as powdery dust spews out. I am 5’3″, and the hopper is a bit high, so I would not add extension legs as one reviewer suggested. He or she is probably closer to 6′ tall. Because of my height, when bits of things fly out of the hopper, I’m more inclined to get it in the face. I think a light face shield from Home Depot would do the trick. After two days and 4 bags of shredded leaves, I have had no problem with the original line that came with the shredder. It is beginning to fray and I will change it now. I did purchase a slightly heavier line as suggested by some reviews and will cut it to size when needed. This is a leaf shredder and it does not take kindly to fat twigs. Keep them out and it will work just fine. I love this product and only gave it 4 stars because I haven’t given it a full “work out” yet. Finally, it stores very easily after leaf season.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great If You Use Thicker Line, November 8, 2011
This review is from: WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder (Lawn & Patio)
Before making my purchase, I read many of the reviews posted here. Per the advice of others, I upgraded to a thicker line. .090 is what I had lying around and that seemed to work well enough. If you go bigger, my guess is that you may have to drill out the holes to accept the thicker line.

Once I had it up and running, I used a snow shovel to dump leaves into the device. Yes, I said a snow shovel, and it worked better than I had hoped. As long as I kept sticks from getting through and deteriorating the line, the Worx leaf shredder was easily able to keep up with a steady diet of leaves.

I was able to shred all the leaves in my yard much faster than if I were using my leaf vacuum w/ attached trash-bin adapter.

Heck, I think I could even describe my experience as fun ….as far as yard work goes.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm, November 7, 2011
This review is from: WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder (Lawn & Patio)
I ordered the Worx WG430 leaf shredder and was very pleased with the prompt shipment, and then the quality of the machine inside the box. No tools are necessary to assemble it. I think it took about 7 minutes to assemble before I turned the power on. I placed mine on top of a vinyl tarp, instead of using a collection bag, and was shredding leaves instantly. It will process all the leaves you can scoop up with your two hands in just seconds. It was cleared before I had another two-hand load. It works best on dry leaves, damp leaves will take a little longer .. wet leaves? just wait a few days. I left it running for almost an hour, no overheating or clogging. Changed the trimmer line in just 3 minutes, again without tools except for a pair of scissors to cut the old line. After I got a good pile of shredded leaves, I used a shovel and wheelbarrow to haul the compost to where I needed it. It is not any noisier than an electric string trimmer, and I did use a dust mask. It disassembles in 30 seconds for storage and cleaning. With an appropriate extension cord, I can take the shredder to the different spots in my yard where I have raked the leaves into piles. The laborious task of trying to rake leaves to one spot for collection by the city is over, and for that reason alone, I would recommend it for senior citizens .. people with disabilities.. and people with huge yards. I work at a home improvement chain; I see a lot of tools that are poorly made with no warranty. This is different; it is evident when you remove it from the box .. it has been designed to last .. oversized, sturdy clasps holding the motor housing, a stable stand, easy to clean surfaces. The safety ON switch is easy to operate with gloves on, and the smooth sound of operation.. all convince me that I bought the right tool. If I had a lot of tree limbs, I would have bought a gas-powered chipper-shredder-mulcher because of the power advantage. But, I need something to shred leaves, and it does that beautifully. And, it has a two-year warranty!

    5.0 out of 5 stars I don’t mind leaves thanks to this mulcher/shredder., November 4, 2011
This review is from: WORX WG430 13 amp Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder (Lawn & Patio)
Well, I tried original trim line strings and it confirmed that I did not purchase thicker / better string line in vain.

I use Oregon Gator Line Square 0.105 trim line and it mulches my oak leaves pretty well. I had to enlarge four holes in plastic head to make trim line go through. Mulching leaves second time only decreases volume around 10% so it is not worth to do it for me. You cannot use 0.130 trim line or bigger trim line if you want to have two lines sticking out from each hole of plastic head. You cannot thread second end of trim line through metal hole of plastic head.

I place Worx leaf shredder on Brute 20 gallon containers that are available at Home Depot for twenty dollars. I have two containers in case I want to shred leaves second time.

I think that I get around 120 gallons of shredded oak leaves per hour (one pass). Second pass is rather quick and it takes around 5 minutes to shred 20 gallons of previously shredded leaves.

Small branches and twigs will dull trim line and shorten it. Once I notice that trim line is short I extend one end of band and make the other end of band shorter. I can do it probably 3-4 times before I replace bands. I cut several 13″ long bands and have them prepared for next mulching session.

I chose this model instead of Flowtron because this model has a more powerful motor. I use 12 or 14 gauge extension cords (100 feet long).

On 11/20/11 I managed to shred all front yard leaves which filled up 96 gallons container. Shredded leaves were compressed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Works within limits, November 2, 2011

First of all, ditch the cutting string that comes standard with this. Go to the hardware store and pick up 95 mil heavy duty string. The default string might work well for one or two bags of leaves before needing to be changed. The higher strength string will last much longer.

Second, don’t even bother trying to use this if your leaves are wet. The leaves will gum up the exit chutes and you’ll end up having to turn the machine off frequently to clear it up. The same will hold true if your leaves have a lot of twigs in it.

You’ll need to weed out any sticks thicker than your pinkie. It will just chew up the string.

Bottom line is this: if you don’t plan on using the resulting leaf mulch you get from this machine in your garden, its probably not worth the time or frustration to use this machine. You won’t be saving on leaf bags, because you can probably stuff as much unchopped leaves into a bag as you can stuff the same quantity of chopped leaves. So unless you’re planning on turning the resulting mulch into compost or mulch for your garden, just skip this.
