 Why We Need Insurance

Couples who are looking at Invitro-fertilization as a way to conceive a child know how expensive the preparations, medications and actual procedures can be. Usually, the would-be parents need to attempt the procedure a couple of times at is rare to conceive on the first try. It may take at least 2 separate cycles before a baby boy or girl is taken to term.  The process can be a very expensive undertaking and many couples will expend a great deal of their financial resources to pay for the procedure.

However, there is a little known Illinois law that mandates that insurance carriers provide coverage for couples who have infertility issues. The following information is provided as a basis for individuals to research their options to see if they may be covered:

1.    Coverage is offered to those living in Illinois
2.    Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) must provide this coverage to employee groups over 25 members.
3.    This coverage may be restricted to heterosexual couples who have not been able to conceive a child after 1 year of trying.

If the couple is allowed to access insurance coverage, the following items may be covered under the policy:

1.    Diagnostic tests, procedures and medical prescriptions
2.    Invitro Fertilization (IVF)  and Artificial Insemination in the womb
3.    Medical Costs with harvesting donor eggs or Sperm
4.    Other technical procedures associated monitoring fetus after implantation

As with any coverage, the law also stipulates restrictions that can prevent coverage in certain situations. Some of these restrictions are:

1.    No benefits to reversal of a previous sterilization procedure such as tubal ligation or vasectomy
2.    No charges are covered to cryo-preserve sperm, eggs or embryos
3.    Non-medical costs for egg donor or surrogates
4.    Experimental treatments and procedures are not covered

If you believe you may be able to take advantage of this Illinois based law, it is important to do your research to see if there are additional restrictions outside of this article. IVF is a very expensive proposition, but if your insurance carrier provides even partial benefits, it is well worth the effort in pursuing a claim based on your eligibility.
